Killara Primary students take out top prize in National waste education program

This year, 5,026 students and 58 schools across Australia took part in the Future Resourcers program – a free six week program offered by Veolia Australia and New Zealand for primary and secondary school students. This year, students were challenged to find an innovative solution to tackle food waste.

After learning about the challenges and solutions to food waste through a series of interactive activities, schools could submit a solution idea via a video pitch, which was then assessed by a panel of four esteemed  judges – Matt Donovan, CEO and Founder of Food for Change, Kirsten Tibballs, Director at Savour Chocolate and Patisserie School, Mischa Hutchison, Food Waste Program Manager at Woolworths Group, and Jenny Downey, Sustainability Manager at Bulla.

Simone Looi-Briton, Head of Sustainability and Public Policy at Veolia Australia and New Zealand said “The Future Resourcers Program enables us to educate and connect with the younger generation – as we see them as critical to solving our environmental challenges in the future. We want young students to understand that solutions can be found to even the largest challenges, and to share our vision for ecological transformation where it’s possible for humans to thrive in balance with the planet.”

Kelli Brogan at Killara Primary School said “We were so pleased with how our students embraced the Future Resources program. It was amazing to see how the program brought their creativity to life, and that if we put our heads together, it’s possible to find some really interesting solutions to some tough challenges. The program enabled us to enhance the learning experience for our students, providing interactive and engaging content in line with the syllabus.”

Killara Primary School, Victoria won the 2021 ‘pitch’ submission for their Smart Bin System idea, scoring 50 out of a possible 60 points. Killara Primary won a Food Waste Reduction Strategy from Veolia, along with waste complementary management services valued at $2,500. Their winning pitch video can be viewed here. Veolia Future Resourcers will return again in 2022. To learn more visit the program website.
